Summary1.Complete life cycles of five sympatricArrenurus spp. were investigated in the laboratory under controlled conditions (Fig. 1).2.Oviposition takes place at different seasons. The yearly egg numbers of the individual species was found to range from 55 to 88 (mean values of 20 or 23 females, Table 1).3.The infestation of the host takes place in the water upon the last praeimaginal stage of the host (pupae in Diptera-Nematocera; last nymphs of Odonata-Zygoptera). The infestation results from accidental contact with the host and leads to a transitory transport phase (phoresy) of the mites (Fig. 2 and 4).4.There were no differences between the potential host range in the laboratory and the effective host range from field studies. Hosts are: imagines of the Nematocera families Dixidae, Culicidae, Chaoboridae, Chironomidae (Tanypodinae), or the Zygoptera family Coenagrionidae (Table 4, Figs. 3 and 5).5.The minimum duration of the parasitic phase, is two days (parasites of Nematocera) or ten days (parasites of Zygoptera). However, in each case the parasites stayed on their host longer than would have been necessary for nutrition (4–7 days for parasites of Nematocera, 18–20 days for parasites of Zygoptera). After termination of the parasitic phase the mites leave the host in any situation (after contact with water, or after the death of the host and even, at places distant from the water).6.Postparasitic development is completed in water. The number of generations per year is discussed.
