The extraordinarily rapid evolution of the World Wide Web (WWW) and related technologies has brought the concepts of electronic markets and virtual trading powerfully to life (Business Week, 1995). In this article we examine the potential of the World Wide Web to function as a global medium for virtual commerce, here defined as the direct exchange of digitized goods/services and the mediated, or brokered, exchange of physical goods. We also describe some of the key characteristics of Webbased markets, from the perspectives of both producers and consumers, and identie the kinds of positioning and marketing strategies which will be needed to achieve a competitive edge in virtual trading zones. Business on the Web differs in important aspects from business conducted in conventional markets; for instance, the nature and bases of competition change, and this will necessarily have implications for the management of the competitive intelligence (CI) function in organizations. letluorhed Wations
