RECENT INVESTIGATIONS of cutaneous sensibility have emphasized spatial rather than temporal elements in perception. The ability to perceive two simultaneous but spatially separated stimuli is reported to be impaired in patients with disease of the central nervous system.’ Defects in perception so identified include extinction, which was defined by Bender as a “process in which a sensation disappears or a stimulus becomes imperceptible when another sensation is evoked by simultaneous stimulation elsewhere in the sensory field.”’ The discrimination of successive stimuli confined to one area of a sensory field is not often tested. One of the few such measurements is the critical flicker-fusion frequency which reflects the ability to distinguish flashes of light separated by a brief time interval. The critical flicker-fusion frequency is said to be reduced in patients with cerebral lesions.2 It was decided to investigate the appreciation of temporally related cutaneous stimuli by a method analogous to the flicker-fusion test of visual perception. A procedure was devised to test the ability to identify cutaneous stimuli separated by a brief time interval. Normal subjects as well as patients with a variety of neurologic lesions were examined.
