In order to understand the intrinsic dynamic behaviour of the material at elevated temperatures, this paper reviews the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) testing technique, presents the principles and limitations of the specimen and equipment for work on the elevated temperature and then introduces geometry for the specimen. The ability of this specimen to keep its temperature relative to the standard cylindrical specimen between the cut-off of the heating device and prior to the impact of the striker, with or without contact with the pressure bars, has been studied, both by experimental tests and by finite-element methods. This particular specimen is used to avoid a complicated SHPB system at an elevated temperature and to keep things as simple as possible.
