plicated markings a tedious business. Some captions are difficult to follow and appear to relate to aspects lost in the printing. Caption references to unknown units and lists of socalled "principal" units, imply that in spite of diligent research, of which there is no doubt, much detail remains to be uncovered and, indeed, the author is quite honest about this in his introduction. In spite of its shortcomings this book has the great merit of revealing much new information and covering its subject more adequately than any other. Such books are always welcome. While no pretence is made to give cover to more than the title indicates, the prospective reader should keep in mind that this is only half the story of Japanese service aircraft markings in the Second World War. The aircraft attacking Pearl Harbor, and perhaps the majority of Japanese aircraft which the Allies later encountered, were of the Japaneses Naval Air Force, which has no part in this survey.—BRUCE ROBERTSON.
