Patients (32) with Hodgkin''s disease who relapsed after a 1st complete remission [CR] induced by nitrogen mustard, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone (MOPP) were retreated with MOPP, chemotherapy. Nineteen patients achieved a 2nd CR. Median duration of the 2nd CR was 21 mo. The likelihood of achieving a 2nd CR could be predicted by the duration of the 1st response. Of 15 patients whose 1st CR was longer than 12 mo., 14 achieved a 2nd CR in contrast to 5 of 17 patients whose initial CR lasted less than 12 mo. (P < 0.001). Median survival of all patients in this study who were re-treated with MOPP was longer than 4 yr after their 1st relapse. Patients with Hodgkin''s disease who relapse after a 1st CR induced by MOPP are not necessarily resistant to further MOPP therapy and can achieve long-term survival with MOPP reinduction.
