A companion series of experiments was undertaken in the unpolluted countryside of Dorset, England, to that undertaken near the industrial area of Birmingham in 1953 (Kettlewell, Heredity 9 : Part 3. December 1955). In each, known numbers of the black and light form of Biston betularia (the peppered moth) were marked and released into the local population and a portion was subsequently recaptured. In the current experiments, 984 marked individuals were set free in a heavily lichened wood where the black form carbonaria does not normally occur; 96 were recaptured subsequently. This represented a return of 12.5% of the typical light form, but only 6.3% of the black carbonaria form. The difference was shown to be due to selective predation by birds, and is the reverse of what was found in an industrial area. A repetition of the Birmingham experiments is also recorded. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: H. B. D. Kettlewell
