EMANDS OF ILLNESS are illness-re-lated thoughts and events that individuals and families experience in response to health problems such as chronic illness. Demands common to a wide range of chronic illnesses include managing treatment regimens, monitoring systems, seeking causal explanations for the illness, and undcrtaking strategies to normalize life.** Despite the extensive literature on adaptation to chronic illness, the conceptofillness demands remains clinically and empirically elusive.
