Of 92 cases of primary gastroenteritis, 52 died. Sonne bacilli were isolated from one case, and a serologically homogeneous strain of Escherichia coli was isolated from 86 cases. The same coliform organism was isolated from only 5% of cases of dietetic or other gastro-intestinal upset, and from 4% of infants not having diarrhea. Clinical symptoms, epidemiology and pathology are discussed, and the possible significance of the E. coli considered.
