Materials and MethodsThe study was conducted between May and September 1985. Almost all of the participants learned of the study through a newsletter published by Common Bond, a local gay and lesbian support organization with a mailing list of 1,200 individuals, and New Mexico AIDS Services, a statewide organization of 100 members providing com-munity education and AIDS support services. After informed consent was obtained, serum was collected and a questionnaire was administered by one of us (HW or BG) or by a disease intervention specialist who was trained at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC; Atlanta, GA) and worked under our supervision. Subjects answered 50 computer-coded items that included questions pertaining to demographics, numbers of sexual partners in and outside of New Mexico, and specific sexual practices. The participants were also asked to describe any changes in sexual behavior resulting from concern about AIDS, but they were not asked to define these self-described sexual practices (eg, safe sex). Not all participants responded to every question. Participants received risk-reduction counseling at the time of enrollment and were required
