One of the major problems in the care of patients with cystic fibrosis is the prevention of recurring respiratory infections. Ultimately, in most cases it is the embarrassment of pulmonary function which leads to death in this disease. The role of the pulmonary secretions in the production of the pulmonary lesion is not at present clear. It has been suggested that the bronchial secretions, because of increased viscosity, produce obstruction which may then be followed by infection. Alternatively, the pulmonary secretions of patients with cystic fibrosis might afford a better culture medium for the growth and proliferation of bacteria. It is evident that further understanding of the pulmonary secretions would provide much needed insight into the pathogenesis and treatment of this disorder.Until recently, very few studies have been carried out on the chemical composition and physical properties of pulmonary secretions. Basch and co-workers (1) defined and analyzed mucus obtained from patients with bronchiectasis in 1941. Von Haesslin (2) and Wells (3) have summarized the early data relating to the chemical composition of mucus. Werner (4)': has studied the chemical properties of mucus ifrom a variety of sources, including the tracheo-Ibronchial tree. More recently, Chernick and Barbero (5) have studied the composition of the~ racheobronchial secretions from individuals with cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. Denton (6) has examined some of the physical properties of sputum, particularly the viscosity. A compre-
