The segregation of a single-strand conformation polymorphism variant of the valosin-containing protein gene (Vcp) in backcrosses of F1mice to inbredMus spretusindicated that the gene mapped close to theXistlocus on the X-chromosome. This position was unexpected in relation to homologies with the gene in humans. Further investigation using an intron sequence fromVcpresulted in mapping of this intron to mouse chromosome 4, which was the position expected from comparison with the human gene map. The most probable explanation of these results is that the mouse X-chromosome has aVcp-processed pseudogene, and that the valosin-containing protein is encoded by the locus on chromosome 4.
