Consistent with the premise that essentialist theories of emotion have been unproductive, I explore instances of emotional life—strips of social interaction that lend themselves to narrative analysis. I make the claim that instances of emotional life, shame, guilt, anger, pride, and other so-called “emotions,” are more parsimoniously construed as narrative plots. A complete narrative theory of emotional life must incorporate the observation that narratives are embodied, that such embodiments as crying and laughter are important features of a story. I discuss crying as a rhetorical expression of the embodiment of emotional life.
