In a population of 927 cows in 5 commercial dairy herds in Gloucestershire, UK, all cases of lameness over an 18-month period were examined by a veterinarian. 766 cases of lameness were noted; heel ulcers were identified in 63 cases and sole ulcers in 176. Overall incidence of lameness was 69.3 cases/100 cows/year. The high incidence in one herd was associated with a very high frequency of sole and heel ulcers and particularly of 'typical' sole ulcers which failed to heal and produced large amounts of granulation tissue. Detailed observations are presented. The findings were inconclusive.
