pH and PO2 [partial pressure of O2] in Mytilus edulis L. and Modiolus modiolus L. decrease; PCO2 [partial pressure of CO2] and the concentrations of Ca2+ and Cl- increase during air exposure. The increase in the concentration of Ca2+ is 10 times greater than that of Cl-. There is a linear correlation between the concentration of Ca2+ and the hemolymph PCO2. The significance of shell valve movements and of the Ca2+/H+ buffering by the CaCO3 shell in response to air exposure is discussed.
