METHODS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION The brain and spinal cord were removed in the usual way and fixed by suspension in 10% formol-saline. InCase 5, the brain was perfused in situ with bismuth carbonate in formol-saline in order to render the blood vessels radio-opaque. Numerous blocks were taken from each brain and spinal cord and embedded in celloidin or paraffin or used for cutting frozen sections. The staining methods employed were haematoxylin and eosin, haematoxylin and van Gieson, Nissi, Mallory's phosphotungstic acid haematoxylin, and Weil's stain for myelin, on all embedded blocks.
