The article presents a study to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) screening in breast cancer. The cost-effectiveness of MRI screening relative to conventional screening is the difference in the total health care costs accrued by the study group and the control group divided by the differ-ence in the total quality-adjusted life years accrued by the study group and the control group. This number is currently compared with a cost-effectiveness threshold of $50,000 per quality-adjusted life year saved, assuming the computations follow the recommendations made by the Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine. Given the investment and time needed to conduct such a trial, careful consideration should be given to the trial design.
