Human beings, cattle and mink with the Chediak-Higashi syndrome (C-HS) are more susceptible to infectious diseases than non-C-HS individuals of the three species. All affected children have been reported to be more susceptible to upper respiratory and other bacterial infections. During a single year, 13 C-HS cattle had 46 distinct infections caused by various micro-organisms, whereas 18 non-C-HS cattle had only four separate infections. During the same period six C-HS calves died, but none of the non-C-HS calves. Epidemiological studies revealed that Aleutian disease and corynebacterium and pas-teurella infections had a higher prevalence and produced a higher mortality rate in C-HS than in non-C-HS mink., Chediak-Higashi mink experimentally infected with Aleutian disease had a mean death-time of 102 days, whereas the mean death-time of non-C-HS mink was 241 days.
