Many of the biological functions of carbohydrates attached to animal cell surfaces and extracellular proteins are mediated through recognition by endogenous animal lectins [11. One particularly large and diverse set of endogenous sugar-binding proteins, the C-type animal lectins, contain Ca2'-dependent carbohydrate-recognition domains (CRDs)[2]. Over the past 5 years, our understanding of carbohydrate recognition processes has moved to the molecular and atomic levels. A combination of X-ray crystallography and site-directed mutagenesis has revealed how individual CRDs achieve selectivity for distinct sets of monosaccharides and how intact animal lectins discriminate between various oligosaccharides.
