Spontaneous shedding of teeth is believed due to a deficiency in the enzyme alkaline phosphatase. There is some overall change in morphology, the pulp chambers are large and there is an absence of cementum. The periodontal fibers were not adherant to the roots of the teeth, but the dentine and enamel were normal in structure. There was a complete loss of odontoblasts in the pulp and the blood vessels were dilated. In all cases there was an abnormally low serum level of alkaline phosphatase. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: D. C. Lyons
