The Dictyosteliaceae are" social amebae" whose life cycle includes both unicellular and multicellular phases. Vegetative growth is strictly unicellular. Upon exhaustion of the food supply, the cells aggregate, forming at first a loose mound, which elongates, falls over, and migrates for a variable period as a" slug" before transforming into a fruiting body in which each ameba becomes either a stalk cell or a spore. The question of how individual amebae decide for the stalk or spore pathway has received increasing attention in recent years (Morrissey 1982).Two kinds of amebae can be distinguished in the slug stage; in normal development, these" prestalk" and" prespore" ceils form the stalk cells and the spores, respectively. The precursor cell types are partially differentiated: Prestalk cells contain autophagic vacuoles (Yamamoto and Takeuchi 1983) that hypertrophy and fuse to form the central vacuole of stalk ceils (Maeda and Takeuchi 1969; Tasaka and Maeda 1983); prespore cells are dehydrated (Schaap 1983) and contain prespore vesicles filled with spore coat proteins (Devine et al. 1982, 1983).
