The physical mechanism o f cigarette smouldering has been studied with a view to elucidating the dependence of temperatures, consumption rates, etc., upon cigarette structure and smoking parameters. Information obtained by special methods includes: peripheral surface temperatures by tine radiation-pyrometry; internal temperature contours, at various times, by tine x-ray photography of the melting of minute inclusions; external distribution of hot gases by schlieren photography; and consumption patterns for a variety of smoking conditions. Considerations o f unidimensional theory and o f the smouldering o f an adiabatic analogue, using graphite particles, yielded a working model for cigarettes. Some conclusions are: that all ‘available’ smoke derives from the outermost annulus containing one half to one third of the total volume; particle temperatures there exceed 900°C and surface temperatures reach 1 200°C. The inner cylinder-three quarters of the total radius-smoulders chiefly by natural convection, which is relevant to the smoker only in that it acts as pilot and maintains the shape of the smouldering zone and the passage of gases through it.
