Used male Sprague-Dawley rats to examine the levels of neuraxis that mediate the various component signs of the behavioral syndrome seen in rats that is caused by pharmacological treatments that produce increased synaptic serotonin or increased stimulation of postsynaptic serotonin receptors. Data indicate that the syndrome, which is characterized by hyperreactivity, hyperactivity, resting tremor, rigidity, reciprocal forepaw treading, hindlimb abduction, and lateral head weaving, is mediated by neural mechanisms present in the pons, medulla, and spinal cord. Implications for the development of a model of the action of serotonin in the CNS are noted.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
