Impurities in the anode and the cathode feed are dramatically detrimental to the PEMFC performance. It has been reported that poisoning of platinum catalysts by sulfur containing compounds is serious and that the performance of the PEMFCs is irreversibly lowered [1]. Experiments were performed either in aqueous solution [2] or in membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) [3]. In practical application of PEMFC systems, fuel cell experiences various operating conditions to meet demand for external load and/or heat supply. In this study, we examined effect of relative humidity in fuel and air streams on contamination of anode and cathode electrodes by sulfur dioxide. We focused our attention on absorption and transport of sulfur dioxide in the fuel cell.
