THE first attempt to prepare metallic ura-nium was made in 1842 by Peligot (14), who reduced uranium chloride by means of sodium in a glazed por-celain crucible. The sodium was covered with layers of dry potassium chloride and uranium chloride and the re-action was started by heat-ing the crucible externally. Zimmerman’s (16) method was similar except that sodium chloride was substi-tuted for the potassium chloride in covering the mixture. According to Moissan (10) this method yields a powder which is contaminated with small amounts of sodium as well as combined nitrogen. Moissan used the more stable double salt UCL^ NaCl, which was heated with sodium in a closed iron tube.Moissan (11) also attempted the reduction of uranium oxide (UsOs) with sugar charcoal in an electric furnace and obtained a metal containing some carbon and otherimpurities. Aloy (1) reduced the oxide UO2 with sugar char-coal, the resulting product being contaminated with carbon. The reduction of UO2 by means of aluminum has also been
