Scars are generally considered as stabilized after an initial period of clinical evolution that varies from 3 months to several years. Many factors can influence this quiescence and reactivate a scar, transforming it into a new wound. Mechanical forces, underlying pathology, trauma, and neoplastic transformation can all induce reappearance of an active wound. Chronic wounds are usually vunerable to recurrence. Pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers, irradiated skin, dermatologic diseases, and burns can be sources of unstable scars.
