The increase in the incidence of lung tumors, which has become the leading cause of death from cancer in humans, emphasizes the importance of determining the frequency and nature of lung cancer in experimental animals. Also, the search for and the establishment of spontaneous hostlung tumor systems in other outbred species may prove to be relevant to the study of the etiology, pathogenesis, and immunologic behavior of lung cancer and the response of this cancer to clinical therapy in humans. The comparative method has, of course, long been recognized as an essential and, indeed, an unavoidable approach to the study of human diseases; the names ofKoch, Pasteur, and Sigurdsson are sufficiently illustrative and convincing.
