Heart rate is typically measured using an electrocardiogram (ECG), which requires patients to wear chest straps with adhesive gel patches that can be abrasive and become uncomfortable for the user. Heart rate may also be monitored using pulse oximetry sensors that may be worn on the fingertip. These methods become inconvenient for long-term usages. Besides the discomfort, these methods are not preferred in the case of newborn or elderly people as their skins are very fragile. Measuring heart rate using a noncontact method could be beneficial for regular non-obtrusive monitoring and may have great value in monitoring a person at home. Therefore, this paper presents a non-contact, innovative heart rate monitoring technique that measures a person's heart rate using a low-cost video camera. This method analyzes the green channel of the RGB images using a unique technique. The error in the measurement of instantaneous heart rate is of 2.07% only, which is quite promising.
