Rapid reconnection of magnetic lines of force occurs whenever two regions of opposite field are pressed together without sufficient fluid pressure between to keep them apart. It has been suggested that rapid reconnection is the basis for solar flares, and that in the magnetopause and the neutral sheet of the geomagnetic tail it plays an essential role in geomagnetic activity. It is pointed out that the escape of fluid from between the fields is the result of magnetohydrodynamic exchange instabilities, leading to reconnection rates which are generally some fraction of the Alfven speed.
