THIS work originated in a desire to obtain evidence of the existence of the sodium compound of ethyl cyanoacetate in an 6 6 enol” form, this substance having been shown by one of US to exhibit properties very different from the corresponding sodium derivative of ethyl malonate (Trans., 1900, 77, 923). Baeyer (Bey., 1885, 13, 3454), on treating ethyl malonate with an equivalent quantity of its sodium derivative in alcoholic solution, ob-tained ethyl phloroglucinoltricarboxylate, and concluded from this that the sodium atom in the sodium derivative was undoubtedly attached to carbon (see also Moore, this vol., p. 165). On applying a similar reaction to ethyl cyanoacetate, it was at once apparent that the condensation between this substance and its sodium derivative proceeded in quite a different way.
