The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of painful shoulder syndrome (PSS) in professors from a private university institution in the city of Lauro de Freitas, Bahia, and to describe their quality of life profile with and without PSS. This is a cross sectional study with a sample of 97 male and female individuals. We used a semi-structured questionnaire and SF-36 for data collection. The results showed that 53.6% were female, mean age of 41(±10.50) years old, 8.5% were right-handed. The prevalence of those who have experienced shoulder pain was 60%, the most common diagnoses was “tendinitis”, “impingement syndrome (IS)” and bursite”. 16.5%,. Considering frequency of shoulder pain, sex was the only variable that was significant (P=0,003). The quality of life was assessed as good, in general, but the comparison between the groups with and without PSS showed pain and vitality with p=0.000 and p =0.033, respectively. The findings showed that the prevalence of PSS is low in professors who have already experienced shoulder pain. Female had the highest frequency of pain and the quality of life was associated with pain and vitality. It is extremely important to carry out further studies in order to develop preventive methods and programs for decreasing the risk of shoulder pain in the studied population.
