No toxic substance has probably received as much attention over so long a period of time as has lead. Investigation of its health consequences focused initially on occupational exposure where the association between cause and effect was most clearly apparent. In a seminal treatise published in 1839, Tanquerel des Planches described the health effects of occupational lead poisoning with remarkable accuracy and in great detail. This triggered a period of intensive clinical and experimental investigation. The special problem of lead poisoning in children was not widely known until later.
