Conventional 3-D seismic survey design software uses a CMP conceptual model to analyze bin attributes such as fold, offset distribution, azimuthal components and bin smear. This model completely ignores reflector structure, subsurface velocity variation and complex raypath geometry. A new approach is presented that combines 3D forward modeling and reflection point analysis techniques to produce theoretical area1 attribute distributions for the modeled CRP data. Comparisons between the CMP and modeled CRP binning results are shown for a simplified demonstration model and for a Gulf of Mexico salt diapir model.
