Drosera tokaiensissubsp.hyugaensis(3x), a hybrid betweenDrosera spatulata(4x) andDrosera rotundifolia(2x), was found in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Results of PCR–RFLP analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of nuclear DNA showed that the hybrid individuals had the combined patterns of both parental species. Moreover, the chloroplast DNA of all hybrid individuals was identical to that ofD. spatulata, suggesting that the hybrids were generated as a result of the transfer of pollen grains fromD. rotundifoliatoD. spatulata.Drosera tokaiensissubsp.hyugaensiswas reported from Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures only.Drosera tokaiensissubsp.tokaiensis(6x), which is an allopolyploid species ofD. tokaiensissubsp.hyugaensis, grows mainly in the Tokai and Kinki districts and is not distributed withD. tokaiensissubsp.hyugaensisin Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. These findings indicate that the hybridization betweenD. spatulataandD. rotundifoliaoccurred independently and repeatedly in various areas of Japan.
