Materials and MethodsAnimals and Materials. Twenty-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats were used for brain labeling experiments. Bovine brains 30 min after slaughter were obtained from the Aurora Packing Co., North Aurora, IL. The brains were brought to the laboratory on ice and kept frozen until use.[l-14C] ManNAc (54.5 mCi/mmol) and [4-14C] NANA (50 mCi/mmol) were purchased from New England Nuclear Corp., Boston, MA.
