Polyoxometalates (POMs) are discrete, molecularly defined, inorganic metal oxide clusters with sizes ranging from approximately one to several nanometers. They exhibit various topologies and diverse chemical and electronic properties, leading to applications in catalysis, electro-optics, mag-netics, medicine, and biology. [1] Although POMs hold so much promise, practical POM-based materials and devices are limited because of the poor processibility of pure POMs. The POM field has been experiencing an unparalleled development of new compounds but only a slow growth of POM-based materials and devices. [1d] Therefore, introducing the inorganic clusters into suitable matrices affords further materials stability, allowing POMs to be exploited in a variety of areas; progress toward this goal should allow practical applications of POM-based materials to be realized.
