The authors (from Milan, Italy, and Paris, France) treated 18 patients with haemophilia A (who had not been previously treated) with heat-treated factor VIII concentrate and investigated the rate of seroconversion to lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV) in comparison with 29 control patients, also untreated haemophiliacs, who were treated with non-heated commercial concentrates during the same period as the test group.None of the 18 patients in the test group were anti-LAV positive before or after treatment whereas 5 of the 29 control patients (17%) were. No patient has any symptom of AIDS or related diseases. The 5 seropositive control patients have no risk factor for AIDS other than treatment with factor VIII concentrate.newline˜D.W. FitzSimons
