Sarmatian deposits of Moldavia, near the Prut river, contain carbonate bodies from several metres to tens of metres in diameter. The framework of these consists mainly of carbonate mud with dominantly clotted fabrics, considered as microbialite. This microbial framework is associated with abundant serpulids and encrusting organisms, mainly bryozoa. In respect to petrographic, sedimentological and morphological characters, we consider the Sarmatian reefs as mud-mounds The occurrence of microbial mud-mounds during Sarmatian times reassesses the question of the disappearence of mud-mounds in the Cenozoic and subsequently that of their perennity until the Present.
