THE FOLLOWING is to offer a comparatively simple proof for the classical theorems of Newman’s, concerning Z,-actions on manifolds. The main idea is taken from Newman’s original paper, but by using a more modern version of the notion of local degree instead of Brouwer’s simplicial notion the proofs become much easier.
