The bacteriophage Mu is both a temperate bacterial virus and a transposable element. During the Mu lytic cycle, uncontrolled replicative transposition takes place. As a result, a single copy of Mu is amplified into ca. 100 copies each inserted at a different site in the host chromosome. During lytic infection or induction, when Mu replication is under viral control, replication is obligatorily coupled to transposition (1, 2).
