MethodsWe calculated average BOLD timeseries for SC ROIs. For every subject, bivariate zero-order (Pearson) correlation was calculated between the seed ROIs’ average timeseries and each cortical and subcortical grayordinate. We converted the correlation coefficients, using Fishers” transform. We calculated two-tailed paired-sample t-tests for the Z-score maps against subjects” average SC-CSF correlations to increase the specificity of our analysis. We used random permutations of the Z-score signs to estimate a null distribution of maximum t-statistics to control for the family-wise error rate. The null hypothesis rejection threshold was set to 0.05 after 10.000 random permutations.ResultsThe SC connectivity map revealed occipital and parietal cortex areas including V1 to V4, extrastriate cortex, inferior parietal cortex, intraparietal areas and PF complex. We also found significant correlations with primary hand motor cortex and connections to frontal, premotor and cingulate eye-fields as well as significant correlations with inferior frontal areas and superior temporal sulcus. SC timecourses also correlated with the posterior thalamus, including anterior and medial pulvinar; likewise, there are connections to central lateral, centre median and parvocellular mediodorsal nuclei. In the cerebellum, we found extensive significant correlations with parts of the lobules VIIB, VIIIA, VIIIB and VI lobules. The results of the individual left and right SCs showed largely identical connections between the either hemisphere and the respective SC with no noticeable statistically significant difference. Observations also show that the connectivity layout of the ventral SC is a subset of dorsal SC connectivity map, while no independent cortical functional correlation could be found at the ventral zone.DiscussionThe SC connectivity map widely agrees with the findings from animal studies. However, we also found significant correlations with prefrontal, posterior temporal and premotor and primary motor cortex that confirmed recent observations that functions of the SC reach far beyond vision, attention, and oculomotor control.
