The whole functional antizymes were translated by a unique ribosomal frameshift mechanism. Antizymes bind to ornithine decarboxylase and promote degradation of ODC by 26S proteasome. They negatively regulate polyamines and suppress the growth of cells. Also, they can arrest cell cycle via binding to cyclin D1 and promoting the ubiquitin-dependent degradation. Moreover, OAZ can reverse differentiation of tumour cells. They are weakly expressed in a variety of tumors and play important roles in the gene therapy for tumors.
