There are at least three types of mechanism which singly or in combination may underlie macrophage activation by an administered agent: 1) the agent may directly affect macrophages or macrophage precursors; 2) the agent may trigger the complement, clotting, or plasminogen cascades to generate effector molecules which in turn affect the function of macrophages; and 3) the agent may induce macrophages themselves, lymphocytes, granulocytes or other cells to release cell-derived factors of macrophage activation.
