Albert the Great's commentary on Aristotle's De anima, written in the years 1254-1257, is one of his major philosophical works. Much more than a mere commentary on Aristotle, it combines Albert's Peripatetic epistemology with the doctrine of abstraction developed by Avicenna and Averroes, his theory of universal cognition derived from Avicenna, and his theory of contemplative happiness. So far, research on Albert's commentary has focused on his theory of the human intellective soul. The article aims at showing Albert's theory of knowledge as a systematic whole, starting with his theory of sensation and going all the way up to the intellectus adeptus, which, according to Albert, allows us to obtain a state of contemplative happiness (felicitas contemplativa) already in this life.
