Gold and platinum linearvoltammetrlc microelectrode arrays constructed by lithographic technology have been developed. This technology enables greatversatility to be obtained with respect to number of sensing elements (3-256 used In this work), size, and spacing. Individual elements are geometrically equivalent to circular disk ultramicroelectrodes of radii 0.6-5/urn. Voltammetrlc measurements may be made at Individual sensing elements, part of the array, or the total linear ensemble. The response of the array Is close, but not exactly equal, to the sum of the Individual sensing elements. A steady-state voltammogram Is yielded with current In the microampere range (oxidation of 1 mM ferrocene In acetonitrile) for the larger arrays. All constructed ensembles ex-hibit microelectrode characteristics that permit measurements to be made In the absence of deliberately added electrolyte. Additionally, transient techniques such as ac andpulse voltammetry can be appliedwith millisecond pulse widths In systems with supporting electrolyte and with high resistance. Commercially available Instrumentation can readily be used with the larger arrays as Is demonstrated In this work. The behavior of microelectrodes with a surface area< 20/itm2 (eg, circular disk of radius, r,< 2.5/im) differs from conventional-sized disk electrodes (eg, radius approximately 1 mm or greater) in that nonlinear diffusion is the predom-inant mode of mass transport (1-12).
