Data were collected from 933 viable ova recovered from 78 sexually mature Wistar rats. Of the 160 ova recovered from rats inseminated before ovulation 92% were fertilized; 1.4% of the fertilized ova were abnormal. As the time of insemination increased after ovulation the percentage of ova fertilized decreased to 71% of 375 recovered from rats inseminated 9-12 hrs. after ovulation; 43% of the fertilized ova were abnormal. An average of 1.2 (1.13) spermatozoa had penetrated each fertilized ovum; there was no appreciable difference in the number of spermatozoa in ova from rats inseminated at different times after ovulation. Pronuclear changes in the ova are described. G. R. R.
