REE and Ba have been determined, by the stable isotope dilution method, on the Quaternary basaltic rocks from the Oshima, Hachijo-jima and Nii-jima islands, from the Usu, Tokachi, Ichinomegata, Joboshi and Fuji volcanoes and the Hamada area in Japan. Considering the newly obtained data and the previously reported data, lateral variation of the REE patterns for basaltic rocks across the Japan arc can be observed. Light REE in basaltic rock increase gradually from the Pacific Ocean side to the Japan Sea side. Some of the tholeiitic basalts have nearly flat REE patterns which are similar to the nearly flat REE pattern for the high alumina basalt occurring in vicinity of the tholeiite province. The REE pattern for the high alumine basalt occurring far from the Japan trench has asteep slope, which cannot be distinguished from the REE pattern for typical alkali basalt.
