METHODThe study was conducted at a small universityaffiliated psychiatric hospital that specializes in the residential care of adolescents and young adults. There were 21 inpatients(ages 13-18 years) on the hospital’s adolescent ward at the time of the study(March-June 1981). The criteria for admission to the study were that patients be between the ages of 13 and 18 years inclusively, that the patient and his or her mother agree conjointly to participate, and that there be no evidence of organic mental disorder.
