Eight virus strains were isolated from 7561 mosquitoes and 26345 Culicoides collected near affected herds during an outbreak of ephemeral fever of cattle in Queensland in 1968. One strain from Mansonia uniformis was identified as Edge Hill virus. The others were characterized as strains of four arboviruses not previously isolated in Australia; three were recovered from Culicoides brevitarsis and one from Culex annulirostris. No strain of ephemeral fever virus was isolated. Mouse neutralization tests on serum from cattle, horses, sheep, wallabies, kangaroos, rats, bandicoots, domestic fowl and man indicated significant prevalence of serum inhibitors to ephemeral fever virus in cattle, to 'Akabane' virus in cattle, horses and sheep, to 'Samford' virus in cattle, to 'D'Aguilar' virus in cattle and sheep, and to 'Belmont virus' in kangaroos, wallabies and cattle.
