We examined 2 pregnant women receiving oral duloxetine for depressive symptoms. During the peripartum period, maternal plasma concentration profiles of duloxetine were obtained for both along with cord blood concentration profile in one woman. The symptoms of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) after delivery were also monitored.According to reports, 7%–12% of pregnant women experience depressive symptoms during the peripartum period. 1 Antidepressants that enter the maternal circulation potentially pass through the placenta to some extent and can be a risk to the fetus because of exposure through the umbilical cord. Approximately 30% of neonates exposed to antidepressants experience NAS. 2 The recrudescence rate of depression during the gestation period shows an approximate of 5-fold increase in turn interrupting the antidepressants. 3 Information on the plasma concentration profile of duloxetine during the peripartum period and its relationship with NAS onset in neonates is required for assessing the risk of duloxetine therapy during pregnancy.
